Dr. Seuss Week: The Language of Wonder at Olive Children + Little STEaMers

At Olive Children + Little STEaMers, stories are more than something we read—they are invitations to explore, question, and discover. During Dr. Seuss Week, our classrooms brought beloved books to life through science experiments, engineering challenges, sensory play, and creative art.


By blending literacy with hands-on learning, children experienced the imaginative worlds of Dr. Seuss while building curiosity, problem-solving skills, and confidence.


Shadows & Shapes: The Shape of Me


Our TK–K students explored The Shape of Me and Other Stuff by stepping outside into the sunshine and investigating shadows.


Children traced the shadows of their bodies and classroom objects, noticing how shapes changed as the sun moved. They rotated objects, compared sizes, and asked thoughtful questions like:


  • “Why is my shadow longer?”

  • “Why does it move?”

  • “Why is it darker than me?”


Through play and observation, children discovered an important scientific idea: light creates shadows, and objects block light to form shapes.


Fizzy Science: Green Eggs and Ham


Inspired by Green Eggs and Ham, our preschoolers turned story time into a bubbling science experiment.


Children created green baking soda “eggs” and gently added vinegar using droppers. Suddenly—fizz, bubbles, and foam!


Excited voices filled the room:


  • “It’s growing!”

  • “It’s bubbling!”

  • “It’s melting!”


This playful activity introduced children to cause and effect and the basics of a chemical reaction.


Engineering Challenge: The Cat in the Hat


Our young engineers also explored The Cat in the Hat through a creative STEM challenge: build the tallest hat.


Using paper strips and a hat base, children experimented with construction strategies. When some hats toppled over, they tried new ideas—gluing strips horizontally first and reinforcing their structures.


Through trial, error, and teamwork, they discovered how strong designs require thoughtful building.


Toddler Learning: Fox in Socks


Our toddlers joined the fun with a colorful matching activity inspired by Fox in Socks.


Children sorted and paired bright socks while practicing:


  • Color recognition

  • Matching and sorting

  • Early pattern awareness



The playful rhymes also introduced them to the joyful rhythm of Dr. Seuss’s language.


Sensory Science: Bartholomew and the Oobleck


Inspired by Bartholomew and the Oobleck, children created their own oobleck and explored its unusual texture.


As they squeezed and poured the mixture, they discovered something fascinating—it sometimes acted like a solid and sometimes like a liquid. This sensory exploration sparked curiosity and scientific thinking.


Creativity & Care for the Earth: The Lorax


To conclude the week, students created colorful Truffula Trees inspired by The Lorax.


Through art and discussion, children connected the story to an important message: caring for our environment.


Learning Through Wonder


Dr. Seuss Week beautifully reflected our philosophy at Olive Children + Little STEaMers:
