Chemists Celebrate Earth Week @ Olive
What is it?
CCEW (Chemists Celebrate Earth Week) is an annual initiative through the American Chemical Society (ACS). This year, Olive Children will be hosting a series of FREE community events aimed at extending S.T.E.M. education to the next generation. This year's theme is Dive into Marine Chemistry.
When is it?
Friday, April 27 @ 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Olive Children St. James (34700 Fremont Blvd., Fremont, CA 94555)
Saturday, April 28 @ 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Olive Children Warm Springs (47385 Warm Springs Blvd., Fremont, CA 94539)
Avery Kruger (U.C. Davis, NOAA Nautilus)
A native of Fremont, Mr. Kruger is a passionate scientist, researcher, and teacher with extensive field experience in marine biology. He brings us his experience in marine ecology, specifically insight from his research expertise in ecology and evolution of species in the Pacific, and in human impact at the chemical and biological interfaces of marine ecology.
Schedule of Activities
Carbon Dioxide and the Ocean Acidification Problem
Students use Bromothymol blue indicator to demonstrate acidification of ocean water upon addition of carbon dioxide gas. This is a major issue to many marine ecosystems, since changing the pH has drastic effects on the ecosystem health!
Oil Spill Cleanup Engineering Challenge
Students to the rescue! Participants engineer a solution to clean up ocean oil spills using everyday, renewable, and resourceful materials!
Ocean Acidification & Sea Shells
Acidification of ocean waters is a major concern for the health of ocean wildlife. Students engage in a hands-on activity showing how acidified ocean water affects coral and seashells.
CCEW Illustrated Poem Contest
Are you a poet? An artist? Let your talents shine!
All submissions are due in person by April 28, 2018. Submissions must be entered at one of the public CCEW events.
